ICE faces calls for accountability after fatal shootings in Maine and Houston

An editorial by the Houston Chronicle and the Maine Trust for Local News calls for accountability from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following two fatal shootings in July.

In Biddeford, Maine, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by an ICE agent. In Houston, Texas, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was also killed by ICE. In both instances, the victims were not formal targets of ICE investigations and were reportedly traveling to work when the incidents occurred.

The editorial notes that in both cases, ICE initially claimed the men ‘weaponized’ their vehicles, a claim that appears to have been false. Furthermore, the agency has not formally disclosed the identities of the agents involved or released information regarding the weapons used in the deaths.
