ICE faces criticism over reporting and technology expansion

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has entered a public dispute with CBS News following a report regarding South Texas construction business owner Benny Melendez. Melendez stated he has installed fencing at job sites to prevent ICE agents from accessing his workers, claiming that despite legal requirements for judicial warrants, he has witnessed agents jumping fences. ICE criticized the news outlet for failing to seek comment and accused the media of running “cover for illegal aliens.”

Separately, federal procurement records indicate ICE is investing heavily in network infrastructure and identity-based access controls to support a significant increase in personnel and sites. The agency has awarded millions of dollars in contracts to vendors such as Swish Data Corporation and Greenbrier Government Solutions for Cisco-related technology. ICE noted in procurement justifications that its reliance on proprietary equipment has limited its ability to utilize competing alternatives for specialized optimization services.
