ICE facility in Miramar faces allegations of poor detention conditions

U.S. Representatives Robert Garcia, Bennie Thompson, and Maxwell Frost have raised concerns regarding the conditions at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Miramar. Based on whistleblower photographs and testimonies, the lawmakers allege that detainees are facing inadequate hygiene, overcrowding, and a lack of basic services.

The evidence presented includes images of individuals sleeping on floors, people using hoses to brush their teeth, and accumulated waste outside the facility. Reports suggest that portable toilets have not been cleaned for extended periods. Furthermore, the lawmakers sent a formal inquiry to the acting director of ICE and the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security, citing allegations that men, women, families, and elderly individuals with chronic illnesses have been held for days or weeks in overcrowded cells with insufficient food and limited access to medical care or legal assistance.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition has stated that administrative offices are effectively functioning as detention centers, where dozens of people are held without access to proper showers or sleeping spaces.
