ICE removes thousands of detainees with final removal orders from online locator
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stopped publicly disclosing the locations of thousands of detainees who are subject to final removal orders. This unannounced change, which took effect on September 15, has made it significantly harder for lawyers and families to locate individuals in custody.
According to data from the Deportation Data Project, nearly 16,000 people booked into ICE detention in July were subject to final removal orders, representing more than one-third of all bookings that month. The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) has warned members that the disappearance of these records could hinder last-minute legal challenges and habeas corpus petitions.
The agency did not explicitly confirm or deny the modification to the Associated Press but stated that individuals with final removal orders are a priority for deportation. The change does not apply to detainees held in Adelanto, California, or at temporary facilities in Minneapolis, New York City, and suburban Chicago, where court orders require immediate listing in the online locator system.
