ICE immigration sweeps disrupt Kansas meat processing and labor

Immigration enforcement operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in southwest Kansas and surrounding areas are causing significant disruptions to the agricultural and meat processing sectors. Following enforcement actions in Dodge City, Liberal, and Garden City, beef processing facilities have reported shortened or canceled shifts due to widespread employee absences.

Industry groups, including the Kansas Livestock Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, have noted that the lack of labor is impacting the logistics chain for dairy, grain distribution, and transport. These operational delays coincide with the lowest U.S. cattle inventory in 75 years and temporary import restrictions on cattle from Mexico due to the New World screwworm.

Economic projections suggest these disruptions could drive up retail meat prices. In Texas, for example, fine cuts like sirloin are projected to see a 15.1% price increase, while ground beef could rise by 11.0%. Local officials and community members have reported that the sweeps have also impacted local businesses and school attendance, as fear of enforcement leads to decreased participation in community life.
