Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s Death Prompts Mexican Legal Action and Houston Protests
An ICE officer shot 52‑year‑old Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Houston’s Magnolia Park neighborhood on July 7. ICE said the agent fired in self‑defence after Salgado allegedly rammed a vehicle into an ICE car and tried to run over an officer; the family disputes that account, saying he was on his way to a construction job and had been working toward legal residency.
The killing raises the toll of fatal ICE confrontations to at least six since President Donald Trump returned to office in 2025, and it sparked a protest of more than a thousand people in Houston, with chants of “ICE out of Houston” and calls for an independent investigation. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia noted that Salgado was not the intended target and that the agents involved were not wearing body cameras.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the government will file criminal complaints with U.S. state and federal prosecutors and pursue civil lawsuits against private firms operating ICE detention centers. Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said the step moves beyond diplomatic notes to legal action, citing 14 Mexican deaths in ICE custody and three during enforcement raids. The move follows previous diplomatic protests and demands for transparent investigations of ICE use of force.
