ICE officers in Maine equipped with body-worn cameras

All Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Maine have been equipped with body-worn cameras and trained in their use, according to Senator Susan Collins. The rollout follows an announcement by Acting ICE Director David Venturella that federal agents nationwide would receive the equipment by the end of August to increase transparency and accountability.

The implementation of body cameras was a key demand from congressional Democrats following a dispute over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding. This demand was partly driven by calls for ICE reform after the fatal shooting of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minnesota earlier this year.

In related DHS developments, a notice published on August 10 indicated that ICE plans to spend up to $20 million on conductive distraction and de-escalation devices, specifically gloves capable of delivering electric shocks, with expected delivery by March 2027.
