ICE launches 45-day ‘Operation Safe California’ enforcement surge

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a 45-day enforcement campaign in California known as ‘Operation Safe California’. The operation, which reportedly began in San Diego and has expanded through the Central Valley and Bay Area, targets both individuals with criminal records and those without.

Reports from local advocates and news outlets indicate a significant surge in detentions, with dozens of arrests occurring in cities such as Fresno, Madera, and Richmond. In the San Joaquin Valley, community members have reported at least 100 detentions in recent days, often occurring while individuals are traveling to or from work.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has criticized the operation, labeling it a ‘campaign of fear’ that undermines communities ahead of midterm elections. While the Department of Homeland Security has not officially confirmed the specific details of the operation, local leaders and school districts have issued warnings to immigrant families. In response to increased federal activity, California recently passed 21 state laws intended to limit the ability of federal agents to operate without identification or in a manner that causes undue alarm, though these measures are set to take effect in January.
