ICE opposes electricity tariff hikes and selects Ericsson for 5G deployment

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has formally opposed a proposal by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP) to increase electricity tariffs for all consumption sectors between September and December 2026. ICE argues that the proposed adjustment lacks sufficient technical and economic justification, noting that the institution currently enjoys financial stability and did not request an adjustment.

ICE has requested that ARESEP dismiss the study or integrate any necessary adjustments into the 2026 year-end settlement. The institution emphasized that the proposed hike would negatively impact households, businesses, and industries across the country’s seven provinces.

In separate developments, ICE has selected Ericsson to deploy Costa Rica’s 5G network. Ericsson will provide the radio access network (RAN) and 5G Core solutions, including network slicing and cybersecurity features, to support the country’s digital transformation and expand existing 4G and 5G coverage.
