ICE plans $2 million investment in Boston Dynamics robots
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is planning to spend between $1 million and $2 million to acquire Spot, a quadruped robot developed by Boston Dynamics. According to acquisition planning documents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the technology is intended to assist agents in hazardous environments.
The robots are designed for inspection, situational awareness, and risk assessment in dangerous, confined, or unstable areas. They are equipped with 360-degree cameras and sensors capable of detecting gases, radiation, and vibrations. A DHS official confirmed that the robots will not be used to perform arrests.
The procurement process is expected to begin with a bidding period in early September, with a potential contract signature in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 and completion projected by April 2027. While the listed execution site is Fort Benning, Georgia, the use of the robots is not expected to be limited to that region.
