Lorenzo Salgado Araujo shooting sparks nationwide protests and legal actions

On July 7, 2026, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52‑year‑old Mexican construction worker living in Houston, was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a traffic stop. No body‑camera or dash‑camera footage captured the incident, and ICE’s account that Salgado tried to ram an officer conflicts with statements from three van passengers who say agents were alongside the vehicle.

Federal District Judge Keith Ellison ordered ICE to release one of those witnesses, Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego, from immigration detention within 48 hours and to return his personal documents. Four investigations are under way by the FBI, DHS, the Texas Rangers and the Harris County district attorney’s office, which has classified the death as a homicide and is conducting an independent inquiry.

The shooting has prompted a wave of public demonstrations across the United States, including vigils in Houston, Williamstown (MA), Concord and Mountain View (CA), Brattleboro (VT), Gilroy (CA) and other cities. Organizers demand the release of all three witnesses, an independent investigation, and accountability for ICE agents. A Harris County DA office later confirmed that no drugs were found in Salgado’s vehicle despite earlier media claims.
