ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado in Houston prompts NY mayor's call to dissolve agency
A 52‑year‑old Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the United States for 35 years and was seeking legal status, was shot by an ICE agent in Houston, Texas, while transporting workers to a construction site. ICE said the agent fired in self‑defence after Salgado ignored orders and attempted to wrestle an officer; Salgado later died in hospital. The incident is reported as at least the eighth fatal ICE encounter since the Trump administration intensified immigration enforcement.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded on X, stating, “Lorenzo Salgado Araujo … we stand with his family and all immigrant families … we will continue to stand by you in the pursuit of justice,” and called for the dissolution of ICE and an independent investigation. Hundreds of people later marched through the area of the shooting, chanting “ICE, get out of Houston.”
