Federal officials said the suspects tried to ram officers or fled a traffic stop, but no video evidence has emerged to support those accounts. Local officials and the public have expressed strong skepticism; Senator Angus King said, "The people of Maine are not going to buy an investigation that’s strictly run by the FBI or DHS."
