ICE to equip all field agents with body cameras by end of August

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting director David Venturella announced that all field officers and agents are expected to be equipped with body-worn cameras by the end of August. This expedited rollout follows public pressure and scrutiny after several fatal shootings involving agents in states like Maine and Texas where no video footage was available.

The agency's policy, Directive 19010.3, allows leadership to withhold footage if releasing it is not deemed to be in the ‘best interests of the agency,’ a provision intended to protect investigations and privacy. Venturella defended this, stating that reports suggesting the policy allows for selective transparency have ‘mischaracterized’ the agency's intent.

Simultaneously, ICE has significantly increased its enforcement operations. Arrest numbers reached a record high in July, with over 50,000 detainees reported. Enforcement tactics have expanded to include increased activity at airports, targeting individuals with expired visas or those with pending asylum and green card applications. This shift has caused friction with airlines and raised concerns among civil rights advocates regarding the vulnerability of migrants currently in the legal system.
