Deutsche Bahn ICE misses scheduled stop in Fulda

An ICE train traveling from Frankfurt to Berlin missed its scheduled stop in Fulda on Sunday after the driver accidentally overlooked the station. The train, ICE 596, eventually stopped in Hünfeld, approximately 18 kilometers away. Passengers destined for Fulda were forced to disembark and continue their journey via regional trains. Due to the length of the long-distance train, first-class doors could not be opened at the Hünfeld platform, requiring passengers to exit through second-class doors.

Deutsche Bahn apologized for the incident and noted that affected passengers may apply for compensation under passenger rights regulations. The train had already experienced a 15-minute delay in Frankfurt due to overcrowding.

The German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) has used the incident to highlight a technical gap in railway operations. GDL Chairman Mario Reiß stated that while safety-critical procedures like stopping at red signals are technically secured, there is currently no comparable technical fallback or automated reminder for scheduled station stops. He suggested that implementing optical or acoustic reminders for planned stops would be beneficial to prevent such errors.
