Icebreaker Shirase docks in Wakkanai for first time in 10 years

The icebreaker Shirase, operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, docked at Wakkanai Port's Suehiro Pier on January 25. This marks the vessel's first visit to the port in ten years, since September 2016.

The visit is part of a commemorative project celebrating the 70th anniversary of Japan's Antarctic research. During an arrival ceremony, Wakkanai Mayor Kudo and Captain Kazunori Kosaka exchanged commemorative shields. Mayor Kudo highlighted the deep historical connection between Wakkanai and Antarctic exploration, noting the city's role in training Antarctic sledge dogs.

To allow the public to engage with the mission, the Shirase will be open to the general public on January 26 and 27. The vessel, which has a standard displacement of 12,650 tons and a length of 138 meters, is tasked with breaking through thick sea ice to transport personnel and supplies for Antarctic observation missions.
