Iceland: Demographic projections and child custody ruling

An analysis of Iceland's demographic trends through 2050 examines how the society has transitioned from a homogeneous population to a multicultural one. Utilizing data from Statistics Iceland, the study explores population shifts based on background and gender, categorizing residents into groups such as Icelanders with foreign backgrounds and various generations of immigrants. The methodology relies on birth country and parental birth country rather than citizenship.

In a separate legal matter, the Icelandic appellate court Landsréttur has stripped a couple of custody of their four children. The decision follows reports of long-term domestic violence and unsustainable upbringing conditions. The family, who arrived in Iceland in 2018, had been under the supervision of child protection services since 2019 following reports of violence and death threats by the father. Despite a temporary period of stability, child protection services intervened again in early 2024 due to repeated incidents of domestic violence and the deteriorating well-being of the children.
