Iceland faces rising costs as Cyprus sees tourism decline

Iceland is emerging as one of Europe’s most expensive destinations. According to data from Statistics Finland and Eurostat, Iceland and Switzerland lead the continent in consumer prices. The Icelandic trade union Viska reports that price levels on the island are 84 percent higher than the European Union average, a significant increase from the previous 42 percent gap.

Specific costs are notably high for food and beverages, which are 56 percent more expensive than the EU average. Meat prices are particularly elevated, sitting approximately 71 percent higher than in other Nordic countries. The Icelandic Competition Authority notes that food prices have been rising rapidly since 2020.

Meanwhile, Cyprus is experiencing a downturn in tourism. While the island saw growth in early 2026, instability in the Middle East following an incident at a British base caused significant disruptions in March and April. Although numbers began to stabilize, July visitor numbers saw a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.1 percent. Polish tourism to Cyprus specifically saw a 15.6 percent decline in July compared to the previous year.
