Iceland falls to Austria and Spain at U20 European Handball Championship
In the men’s U20 European Handball Championship held in Cluj‑Napoca, Romania, Iceland lost its opening match to Austria 32‑27. Austria built a 9‑4 lead in the first half, but Iceland closed the gap before the final minutes. Team coach Sandra Zapletal said, "Wir hatten das Spiel unter Kontrolle. Island fand keine Lösungen gegen unsere Deckung. Erst als wir ein wenig vom Plan abgewichen sind, haben wir sie ins Spiel kommen lassen." After the defeat, Austria will focus on its next group game against Latvia.
Two days later, Iceland faced Spain and was defeated 33‑28. Spain took a 16‑12 lead at halftime and held on despite Iceland’s attempts to rally in the second half.
