Iceland strengthens Arctic security and energy ties with U.S. and Canada

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Reykjavik to strengthen security cooperation with Iceland, emphasizing the nation’s strategic role in defending the North Atlantic and the Arctic. Rubio noted Iceland’s importance to NATO and the U.S. for power projection and monitoring activities in the region. The visit follows recent diplomatic tensions regarding controversial maps and comments concerning the sovereignty of Iceland and Greenland.

Separately, Canada and Iceland have agreed to enhance cooperation in Arctic security and energy. Following meetings between Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, the two nations announced plans to create a bilateral geothermal energy network. This initiative aims to deploy clean energy technologies in remote northern communities. Both NATO members also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Alliance’s presence in the Arctic and are exploring the modernization of free trade agreements with EFTA members.
