Iceland surpasses Switzerland as world's most expensive country

Iceland has surpassed Switzerland as the world's most expensive country in terms of price levels. According to data from Eurostat and the Central Bank of Iceland, price levels on the island are approximately 3 percent higher than in Switzerland.

Data cited by the Icelandic labor union Viska indicates that prices in Iceland are 84 percent higher than the average for the 27 European Union member states. Specific sectors show significant disparities, such as meat prices being roughly 71 percent higher than the EU average. High costs are also noted in real estate, vehicles, and various services.

Economic analysts attribute these high costs to Iceland's geographic isolation and small market size, which necessitate a heavy reliance on imports. The resulting transportation and import expenses contribute significantly to the overall cost of living for both residents and tourists.
