Iceland to Hold EU Membership Referendum on Aug 29

Iceland will vote on 29 August whether to restart negotiations to join the European Union, ending a hiatus of more than a decade. The referendum is the first step in a two‑stage process that could lead to accession later this decade.

Supporters argue that EU membership would strengthen the economy, expand trade and give Iceland greater influence as Arctic competition intensifies. Opponents warn that joining would force Iceland to surrender control over its fisheries, trade policy and currency, calling it “the worst business idea” and a step away from democracy. Iceland currently participates in the EU single market through the European Economic Area, retaining its own fishing policy.

With a population of about 402,000, fish exports account for roughly 30 % of earnings. The country will keep its NATO membership and existing defence agreement with the United States regardless of the vote.
