Iceland to Hold First Ever Referendum on EU Accession Talks

Former ambassador and international‑affairs expert Albert Jónsson said Iceland will organize a national referendum to decide whether to continue negotiations for EU membership, a move that has never been done before. He highlighted the complexity of EU entry, including issues such as adopting the euro, public debt levels and the importance of an informed electorate.

Jónsson argued that Iceland needs transparent public debate on the benefits and risks of EU accession, stressing that retaining an independent monetary policy and understanding the economic implications are essential for voters.

The proposed referendum would make Iceland the only EU country to let its citizens vote directly on the continuation of accession negotiations, aiming to provide clearer insight into public opinion before any further steps are taken.
