Iceland to vote on restarting EU accession talks on Aug. 29

Iceland is holding a nationwide referendum on 29 August in which its roughly 400,000 eligible voters will decide whether the government should restart negotiations to join the European Union. The vote is a first step; a second referendum would be required to approve full membership.

The issue pits the island’s fishing‑dependent economy against security concerns that have grown since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Pro‑EU activists from the movement Evrópuhreyfingin, led by campaign board members Snærós Sindradóttir and Páll Rafnar Thorsteinsson, are urging a “restart” of the talks, while opponents warn about losing control over the fishing industry that underpins Iceland’s prosperity.

The referendum reflects broader debates about Iceland’s sovereignty, its role as a gateway to the Atlantic and the Arctic, and its alignment with NATO’s security framework.
