Iceland Travel Guidance: Visa Rules and Tour Booking Timelines

Iceland has been a full member of the Schengen Area since 2001, meaning there are no internal passport checks and the standard 90‑day stay limit applies. Citizens of EU, EEA and Schengen‑associated countries do not need a visa, while nationals of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and several others are visa‑exempt but must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization once it becomes mandatory. Travelers from countries outside these groups must apply for a Schengen visa before arrival.

For private tours, the guide advises starting arrangements six to twelve months in advance. Summer (June‑August) is the peak season, so bookings for high‑demand accommodations and specialized vehicles should be made up to a year ahead. The shoulder season (May, September‑October) allows slightly later planning, typically six to nine months before travel, offering fewer crowds and good conditions for sight‑seeing and northern‑light viewing.
