Icelandic authorities board anti-whaling protest vessel
Icelandic security forces boarded the anti-whaling protest vessel Bandero on July 30, leading to the detention of 21 crew members. The Icelandic Coast Guard stated the boarding occurred after the crew of the whaling ship Hvalur 9 requested assistance, claiming their safety was threatened. Authorities reported that the Bandero ignored instructions to leave Icelandic waters and failed to comply with orders to stop its engines.
Most of the detained crew members, including Canadian activist Shannon Mann, have since been deported by the Icelandic government. While the crew faces potential bans from returning to Iceland and several European countries, they intend to contest these restrictions.
Paul Watson, of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation which operates the Bandero, stated that the mission was a success in its goal to “focus international attention on Iceland’s continued illegal whaling operations.” The crew's original objective was to interrupt whaling activities by blocking harpoons and documenting the process.
