Icelandic Centre Party MPs dispute EU accession and US influence
Former Centre Party MP Bjarni Ben quit politics after the latest election and demanded answers from minister Þórgerður Katrín about the Dutch parliament’s unexpected opposition to Icelandic interests. Former Independence Party leader Þorsteinn Pálsson commented that the foreign minister had allegedly misrepresented those talks.
Centre Party MP Ingibjörg Davíðsdóttir was sharply criticised after questioning why Iceland’s EU accession negotiations were not conducted under US oversight. MPs voted against allowing Icelanders to be consulted on EU membership, preferring instead to seek input from President Trump. Several politicians and commentators denounced her remarks as inappropriate.
