Icelandic Coast Guard conducts remote medical evacuations near Greenland

The Icelandic Coast Guard has conducted complex long-distance medical evacuations involving cruise ships in the waters near Greenland and Jan Mayen.

In one recent operation, a helicopter was dispatched to a cruise ship located in a fjord north of Nerlerit Inaat in Greenland. The mission required significant logistics, including refueling stops in Akureyri and Nerlerit Inaat, and was supported by an Icelandic surveillance aircraft. The patient was airlifted to Ísafjörður and subsequently transported to Reykjavík via a medical aircraft.

Simultaneously, the Coast Guard responded to a separate medical emergency involving a crew member on another vessel approximately 260 kilometers north of Iceland. These missions highlight the logistical challenges of providing emergency medical services in the remote maritime regions north of Iceland.
