Icelandic commentator Máni Pétursson says he'll vote yes in EU membership referendum

Máni Pétursson, an ombudsman and media figure, posted on Facebook that he will vote yes in Iceland's national referendum on European Union membership scheduled for 29 August. Although he admits little personal interest in EU accession, he argues that the public should be allowed to decide and criticises both the pro‑ and anti‑EU camps for spreading misinformation. Pétursson suggested that a panel of experts should provide balanced information to voters.

Former MP Björn Leví Gunnarsson agreed that the debate influences his own vote, while Independent Party city councilor Andri Steinn Hilmarsson said the only reason he might support EU membership would be to see concrete proposals from Pétursson.
