Icelandic Confederation of Labour criticizes Central Bank leadership
The Icelandic Confederation of Labour (ASÍ) has issued a formal condemnation of the leadership at the Central Bank of Iceland. In a resolution passed by the 47th ASÍ congress, the confederation criticized the bank's recent conduct toward workers and labor organizations.
ASÍ argues that the Central Bank, as an independent institution, has failed to maintain the necessary neutrality and credibility. The resolution points out that while the bank's analyses typically attribute inflation and economic instability to global conflicts, commodity prices, and market volatility, the bank's leadership has instead focused its criticism on wage increases.
The confederation specifically cited remarks from the Central Bank Governor regarding the economic situation and calls to delay wage increases. Additionally, the resolution noted comments from the Deputy Governor suggesting that economic tightening might be used to increase unemployment to discourage labor contract negotiations. ASÍ is calling for the bank's leadership to cease political rhetoric against workers and is requesting that the Central Bank's Board and the Althingi Economic and Trade Committee review the matter.
