Icelandic drama 'The Love That Remains' opens in Mexican cinemas on July 31

The Icelandic film *The Love That Remains* (original title *El amor que permanece*) will be released in Mexican theatres on 31 July, distributed by Lool Films. Directed and written by Hlynur Pálmason, the drama stars Saga Garðarsdóttir and Sverrir Gudnason as a recently separated couple reuniting with their three children in a rural village.

The film earned international attention after winning the Palm Dog award at the Cannes Premiere section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and it was selected to represent Iceland in the Best International Feature category at the 98th Academy Awards. It also received the Latin American Critics Award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival and holds a 94 % approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mexican audiences will see the film as part of a broader program that previously included special screenings at the Cineteca Nacional’s 79‑edition International Film Showcase and at the Guadalajara Festival, underscoring its growing reputation as a critically acclaimed European drama.
