Icelandic government faces instability over EU application

The Icelandic government faces potential instability following its decision to re-prioritize the nation's application for European Union membership. Economist Guðmundur Ólafsson has characterized the move as a “pure political mistake,” suggesting that the government should have waited due to ongoing economic and structural challenges within the EU, particularly in Southern Europe and among newer member states.

There are calls for members of parliament to submit a resolution to withdraw the 2009 membership application. If such a proposal is passed, it could lead to the resignation of the government or specific ministers. The shift in policy has caused confusion, as several parties in the governing coalition, including the Social Democratic Alliance, have moved away from positions held during previous election campaigns.
