Icelandic infrastructure and tourism policy under discussion

Representatives from the Alþingi Industry Committee recently visited Samorka to discuss the current state and future of Iceland’s energy and utility infrastructure. The discussions focused on the significant investment needs required for maintenance, renewal, and the expansion of essential services, including electricity, hot and cold water, and sewage systems. Samorka emphasized the necessity of a stable regulatory environment to ensure companies can undertake long-term infrastructure projects to meet the growing needs of households and businesses.

Separately, a draft bill has been introduced in the government consultation portal regarding a new nature and infrastructure fee. The proposal suggests a 4,500 ISK charge for access to three of Iceland’s most popular tourist sites: Þingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir. While intended to support value creation, safety, and load management, the proposal has raised concerns regarding its impact on existing revenue models. For instance, at Þingvellir National Park, current service fees and parking charges are used for land guardianship and infrastructure maintenance; the new bill could potentially prohibit certain service fee collections, leading to uncertainty regarding the park's operational funding.
