Icelandic political commentator warns of rising ultra-wealthy elite

Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson has expressed concerns regarding the rise of an ultra-wealthy elite in Iceland and globally. In a recent interview, he argued that the era of neoliberalism and globalization has led to a massive redistribution of wealth, where a small group of individuals holds disproportionate power.

Hannibalsson noted that the breakdown of the post-war international regulatory system, originally led by the United States, has allowed wealth to accumulate in tax havens, potentially creating an economy as large as the third-largest in the world. He specifically criticized Iceland for lacking a resource policy and failing to follow laws regarding national ownership, which he claims has allowed a small group of the super-rich to gain significant influence and begin purchasing up the country.

Regarding international relations, Hannibalsson highlighted the uncertainty surrounding European cooperation and the EEA agreement, stating that global upheavals necessitate a reassessment of Iceland’s position. He confirmed his intention to vote ‘Yes’ in the upcoming referendum on August 29.
