Icelandic Peninsula holds WWII aircraft wreckage sites
Remnants of aircraft from the World War II era can still be found at more than 33 locations across the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. These sites, located outside of airports, consist of wreckage from planes that either crashed into mountains or were shot down.
The remains include two German aircraft that were flown to the area, as well as wreckage belonging to Allied forces. Some components have been removed from their original sites over the decades, including an engine from a British plane that landed in Bláfjöll in 1945 and an engine from a Hudson aircraft that went down in Kistufell during the same year.
Observers note that many items have been taken by travelers as souvenirs, which can obscure the historical context and location of the crash sites. The remaining wreckage serves as a memorial to the events and the individuals involved.
