Icelandic secondary schools face budget cuts
Secondary schools in Iceland, including Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands (FSu) and Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni (ML), are experiencing the impact of a government financial plan that projects a 7.1% reduction in funding for secondary education over the next five years.
School administrators report that these cuts have led to staff layoffs, reduced working hours, and the elimination of specific roles, such as the library director at ML. At ML, a contract for psychological services for students was terminated, a move administrators noted is particularly difficult given that many students live in school dormitories.
FSu is also managing accumulated deficits that must be paid down over the next two years. To mitigate the impact, the school has implemented various optimization measures, including reducing ventilation usage and leaving certain vacant positions unfilled.
