Icelandic tax reform proposal and Faroe Islands sports university funding

In Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, chairman of the Centre Party (Miðflokkurinn), has submitted a parliamentary resolution to Alþingi proposing the total abolition of inheritance tax. He argues that the tax is morally questionable and creates an inefficient, complex system that unfairly taxes assets already subject to taxation during a family's period of mourning. While proponents of the tax argue it is a necessary tool to prevent wealth concentration and fund social infrastructure, the proposal is being led by members of the Centre Party and the Independence Party.

In the Faroe Islands, Minister of Culture Bárður á Lakjuni has confirmed that the government will match funding for a new sports university in Vágur. The Nordea Foundation has pledged 39.8 million ISK toward the construction of the school, contingent upon the government providing an equal amount. The project is expected to proceed following the completion of design work and the passage of an authorizing law in the Løgting, with funds allocated in the budget through 2029.
