Icelandic union leaders clash over labor agreement terms

Tensions have risen between Icelandic labor union leaders following recent collective bargaining outcomes. Halla Gunnarsdóttir, chair of VR, has faced criticism from Sólveig Anna, chair of Efling, and Vilhjálmur Birgisson of Starfsgreinasambandið.

Critics have characterized the recent negotiations as a ‘media circus’ and a ‘performance’ that failed to deliver improved terms for union members. A key point of contention is the distinction between the agreements reached by the Breiðfylking coalition and those of VR. While the Breiðfylking agreement secured shorter contract periods, VR obtained a conditional right to exit collective agreements if inflation exceeds specific thresholds. Neither faction secured automatic purchasing power adjustments, though the ability for VR to exit contracts during high inflation remains a significant differentiator.
