Icelandic women's strike documented in new film

The documentary film ‘Un giorno senza donne’ (A Day Without Women), directed by Emmy winner Pamela Hogan, explores the historic women's strike in Iceland on October 24, 1975. On that day, approximately 90% of Icelandic women ceased working, cooking, and childcare, effectively halting much of the country's social and economic functions to demand equal rights and pay parity.

Through archival footage and personal testimonies, the film illustrates how this collective action highlighted the essential nature of women's labor. The movement is credited with helping propel Iceland toward its current status as a global leader in gender equality. The documentary features Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who later became the world's first democratically elected female head of state, and includes a new musical composition by the Icelandic artist Björk.
