Iceland's EU Membership Referendum Sparks Heated Political Debate

Iceland is preparing for a national referendum on 29 August to decide whether to join the European Union. The campaign has intensified after Independence Party leader Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir suggested that a “yes” vote would hand the initiative to Thorgerða Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, describing it as an “empty vessel” for her influence. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and other party leaders have responded, emphasizing that the referendum concerns the country's future relationship with the EU rather than any single politician.

Opposition parties and newly formed youth groups such as “Ung gegn ESB” have mobilised, urging citizens to reject EU membership. The debate highlights contrasting views on sovereignty, economic integration, and the role of individual political figures in shaping the outcome.
