Iceland's Golden Circle and Ring Road Offer Iconic Self‑Drive Tourist Routes

The Golden Circle is a 300‑kilometre loop east of Reykjavík that links three of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions: Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall. The route is fully drivable without a guide, and many tours also add the Kerið volcanic crater. Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the site of the world’s oldest still‑functioning parliament and the 1944 declaration of independence.

The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire island for about 332 km, connecting dramatic waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui and Skógafoss, as well as the glacier‑filled region around Vatnajökull and the Jökulsárlón iceberg lagoon. The road demands careful planning for weather, road conditions and fuel stops, but it offers a comprehensive view of Iceland’s volcanic, glacial and coastal landscapes for self‑driving tourists.
