Iceland's Trade Links with Europe Boost Fish and Aluminum Exports

Freightlink operates key Ro‑Ro maritime corridors that connect Iceland directly with major European transport hubs. The Hirtshals ↔ Seyðisfjörður route links the Danish port of Hirtshals with eastern Iceland, while the Rotterdam Europoort ↔ Þorlákshöfn service joins the Dutch hub to Iceland’s southern coast. Over 95 % of Icelandic cargo moves by sea, and more than 60 % of imports and 75 % of exports are exchanged with the EU.

These routes support Iceland’s core export sectors: sustainable fish and seafood, which require rapid refrigerated transport; green aluminum produced with 100 % renewable energy; and specialized high‑tech food‑processing equipment. By providing faster, temperature‑controlled and specialized cargo handling, the corridors aim to improve supply‑chain efficiency for European buyers and strengthen Iceland’s position in these markets.
