ICEYE and Arianespace partner to evaluate Ariane 6 for SAR satellite launches

ICEYE and Arianespace have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to evaluate the use of the Ariane 6 heavy-lift launch vehicle for ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite missions. The partnership aims to support European governmental and institutional requirements by securing autonomous access to space and reinforcing sovereign launch capabilities for defense and civil Earth observation.

The technical evaluation will focus on deploying ICEYE’s smallsat SAR platforms as primary or rideshare payloads from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou. The collaboration will explore both Ariane 62 and Ariane 64 configurations to place satellites into precise polar and sun-synchronous orbits. ICEYE’s X-band SAR sensors provide high-resolution imagery capable of penetrating cloud cover and darkness, which is critical for national security, maritime monitoring, and disaster response.

This agreement aligns with Europe’s strategic mandate for space autonomy. As Arianespace increases the operational flight cadence of Ariane 6, ICEYE plans to scale its production from 50 satellites per year to 100 satellites annually starting in 2027.
