ICMBio rejects MT-251 highway duplication in Chapada dos Guimarães

The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) has issued an unfavorable opinion regarding the duplication of the MT-251 highway through the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. While Ibama holds the responsibility for environmental licensing, it requested ICMBio's assessment, which resulted in the rejection of the project.

The Mato Grosso State Secretariat of Infrastructure and Logistics (Sinfra) is currently evaluating next steps to make the roadwork viable. State officials argue that the duplication is essential to improve traffic flow and ensure driver safety on the route between Cuiabá and Chapada dos Guimarães.

In addition to the highway duplication, Sinfra is awaiting licensing for the construction of a tunnel at Portão do Inferno, which the state government views as a definitive solution for regional traffic safety and fluidity.
