ICMBio ordered to regularize communities in Guaricana National Park

A federal court in Curitiba has ordered the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) to regularize the status of traditional communities within the Guaricana National Park in Paraná. The ruling follows a civil public action challenging the park's management plan.

The judge determined that ICMBio has 18 months to complete administrative procedures for commitment terms with indigenous groups, specifically the Tupã Nhe’e Kretã, as well as local farmers and extractivists. The court noted that the 11-year delay in resolving these land use issues exceeded reasonable parameters.

The legal challenge also contested specific management plan regulations regarding the introduction of exotic species and the use of pesticides within the conservation unit.
