ICMR launches S.H.I.N.E. programme for 30,000 students

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched the second edition of its S.H.I.N.E. (Science, Health and Innovation for NextGen Explorers) programme. Held on August 11 and 12, the nationwide initiative aims to introduce approximately 30,000 students from grades 9 to 12 to the field of scientific and health research.

The programme operates across 83 locations, including ICMR institutes, Department of Health Research (DHR) Model Rural Health Research Units, and affiliated field units. Participating students engage in guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, and live demonstrations. The initiative provides opportunities for students to interact directly with scientists to learn about their research journeys and areas of expertise.

ICMR Director General and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, described the programme as a way to ignite scientific curiosity and inspire the next generation of health researchers. The outreach follows a call by Prime Minister Modi for students to experience life as a scientist.
