ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition study links diet and exercise to metabolic health

A comprehensive review by the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition has analyzed the effectiveness of various lifestyle interventions on weight and metabolic health. The study synthesized data from 112 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, encompassing 2,332 randomized controlled trials and approximately 2.48 million participants across more than 50 countries.

The findings indicate that combining diet and physical activity is more effective for long-term weight loss and metabolic health than either method alone. Over a 12-month period, participants using a combined approach lost approximately 3.68 kg more than control groups. While low-calorie diets showed the most significant initial weight loss (2.64 kg more than control groups) within the first three months, regular physical activity is deemed essential for sustained weight management.

Beyond weight loss, the research highlights significant metabolic benefits. Physical activity was linked to reductions in systolic blood pressure over 6 to 12 months. Furthermore, integrated diet and exercise programs showed improvements in blood glucose levels and insulin resistance. Notably, the study concludes that many health benefits from lifestyle improvements are not strictly dependent on the total amount of weight lost.
