ICPC dismisses security officer for facilitating unauthorised access to Nasir El-Rufai

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed security officer Daniel Stephen for facilitating unauthorised access to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

According to an internal investigation and CCTV footage, Stephen assisted Aichatou Assabe El-Rufai in bypassing established security protocols on July 5, 2026. Stephen reportedly drove Assabe into the premises, escorted her through a back entrance, and took her to the section where her husband was being held in custody.

In a handwritten statement to an investigative panel, Stephen admitted to helping Assabe gain access ‘through the back door’. During the approximately 15-minute visit, Assabe allegedly handed El-Rufai a document, collected a black purse, and spoke with him regarding a court matter. An official noted that Stephen reportedly switched off the lights to conceal the encounter.

Nasir El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19 following his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He is currently facing trial for alleged money laundering and the conversion of public property, charges which he has denied.
