ICPC opposes bail for Jimi Lawal in El-Rufai misconduct case

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has opposed a bail application filed by Jimi Lawal, a co-defendant in a financial misconduct case involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

During proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, Lawal’s defense team requested bail on medical grounds, arguing that his health condition necessitates his release. The defense also noted that Lawal had previously been granted administrative bail. However, the ICPC has filed a counter-affidavit to oppose the request.

Presiding judge Justice Hauwa’u Buhari adjourned the bail hearing to October 16, 2026, and scheduled the commencement of the substantive trial for December 8. The proceedings were also impacted by the introduction of new legal counsel for both the prosecution and the defense, leading to requests for time to review case files and affidavits.
