ICRC prioritizes identification of 1,000 bodies in Nepal
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is prioritizing the identification of nearly 1,000 bodies following a catastrophe in Nepal. Alfonso Verdú, the ICRC regional delegate for India, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan, stated that the primary focus is preserving human remains and collecting DNA samples to match with family information.
To facilitate dignified treatment of the deceased, the ICRC is assisting the Nepalese government in securing refrigerators. The humanitarian response is a collaborative effort involving the Nepalese government, military, and police, alongside the Indian Red Cross and the Indian forensic medicine university.
In terms of immediate relief, the Nepalese Red Cross has distributed thousands of hygiene kits, mattresses, and emergency toilets over a four-day period to assist displaced populations.
